MAPPING ARTICLE

From the "Mappings" reading by Denis Cosgrove we discovered a direct
link between our proposed project and drift mapping. the article
discusses drift mapping's influence from conceptual and performance
art and its goal of increased public consciousness and participation
in everyday life. One of our project's goals is to in fact increase
public consciousness by incorporating our work into the everyday life.
As de Certeau said it, "they are able to write without being able to
read it" and this is the mold we are trying to break. We want our
everyday "city street walker" to be more conscious of where and on
what they are walking, we want them to realize not only what is
physically there but what is more naturally meant to be there. draft
mapping attempts to return the map to everyday life and our project
wants to be a part of the everyday routine. our project "facilitates
alternative impressions of and interventions in the urban milieu." And
so by providing these alternative views we are in turn creating the
"unusual walk." our project critiques the contemporary circumstances
of the urban milieu by attempting to "re-territorialize seemingly
repressed or spent ground," with a heavily incorporated theme of
nature in an urban environment.

The Artists were so nice and only interacted if you approached them! I asked if they were from the Festival and they gave me a flyer! They were also walking EXTREMELY slow, some slower than others!

As I walked up the stairs out of the L train I looked up in search of the physical graffiti and when i saw it, finally, I was so excited! I shouted to my friends to look up, i was so loud that I caused the people in the street to look up as well. I was so happy to finally see it especially since I live so close and every time I would pass the building at night i would look for it. Seeing other people's reactions to it made me feel so special as if I was in on the "secret" it was an amazing experience!

THE MAPPING OF UNION SQUARE

It starts with a strip of illustration board. (3.8 ft. long. 14th Street in 3.8 km long)

Imprinted on the illustration board is the

phrase "14th Street mapping assignment" repeated again and again to form a pattern.

This illustration board is then cut into many pieces, each about the size of a palm (big enough to be grasp and not loose).

The backs of these individual cards states:

You are a part of the mapping of 14th Street.

Are you off to somewhere on 14th?

Building? Uphigh? Below?

If you get off at union square in the morning, it means that you are in some distance of 14th street.

The pieces of illustration board were handed out to those at 14th Street Union Square.

We are not mapping 14th Street, a randomly selected and willing population New York is.

It could very much bee seen as a method of detection.

But our project maps the natural way of things, the natural flow. Individual's everyday routines and where they go, depict a map not visible to anyone.

The physical map that we have provided is a "Height" map. From those who had received the pieces of illustration boards, we had asked them the whereabouts (intersection) and height (floor number, building?) of where they were headed.

Make grass/ or turf into a yoga mat like size.
Roll it up on sidewalks = reading place,picnic place....
performing arts that the public is able to participate in as well.

Lab Group Work 10/8/09

“What’s underneath your feet?”

Our message is to cause people to think about their daily path around and beneath them instead of only the path in front of them. Our objective is to get people to engage with their surroundings in a more active way than usual, without interruption. In order to provide said engagement we are proposing the use of video instillation. The uncomplicated nature of video instillation will allow for an easy set-up and straightforward understanding.

Our goal is to be as discreet as possible with the media.

Our Media will flow with the daily routine of our community just as the people’s thoughts on the subject. Our media will bring people to see others in a different perspective, causing them to think about what someone else might be doing, instead of only what they themselves are doing. Our media continues to flow through the crowds continuously and effortlessly.

We would need help from MTA officials and cooperation from the building owners. We would need extensive technical help.

Our piece would accomplish deep thought and interaction within the community. It would help people engage in a different side of life. It will open their eyes, literally, to a different perspective on their surroundings. All in all, we feel that our piece will provide a unique display of further thought.
